Jenny and Jerry visit Maui

[Photos taken by Marcy, John, Jenny, and Jerry]

We are so excited that John's parents were able to come visit us on Maui.  It wasn't certain they would be able to make the long trip, but it worked out and we're so glad it did!  They had never been to Hawai'i and it was great fun showing them around.

Right off the bat we got some great views at Ho'okipa Lookout.  Jerry has a nice camera that can capture wonderful distance images.  For example, some windsurfers shooting back and forth out on the windy waves:

Good day for surfing too:

Some rather dramatic lighting on the coastline:

And a beautiful close-up of a wave smashing against the rocks:

While we were there, a large dog pulled up in a small car:

Turtles!  This has been a consistently great place to watch sea turtles sunning on the beach:

Jerry captured a nice image of the west Maui mountains under the cover of clouds, pretty much the standard state for that part of the island lately:

Nice day in Lahaina, checking out the amazing banyan tree:

Beautiful overlook and a lovely day:

John joined us for a tour of the lavender farm and captured this shot from a distance:

Jenny checking out the amazing variety of plants at the farm:

Excellent photo op spot:

The actual "lavender" part of the farm:

Hello little Buddha:

More exotic (to us, at least) flowers:

Funny sign at the strawberry farm on the way home:

Sunday was the big day - a drive around the entire east Maui loop.  It was a long one, but it was worth it!

Lots of gawking at greenery and vegetation and steep slopes and interesting plants.  Here's a little house on top of a ridge:

A view toward Ke'anae and a glimpse at some of the rain clouds that kept us wet off and on for most of the day:

Quick glance at the curvy road ahead - happy to have John in the driver's seat:

Lovely lighting captured quite well by Jerry's camera:

Optimistic plants growing out of the lava:

Checking out Ching's Pond:

Amazing waterfalls way back in the valley:

Nice little one closer up (at Pua'a Ka'a park):

We had a fun little surprise for Jerry - a trek through a lava tube!

Popping out at the other side:

Another interesting shot from the good camera - a neat close-up of a cascade:

The road was always entertaining in its own right, sometimes almost completely canopied by green limbs:

Hana Bay, where a stand-up paddler was doing yoga - amazing to me:

Nice view of the rocks across the way from Hana Bay:

I hopped back over to the red sand beach, this time with the camera.  So I can now present to you the red sand beach near Hana Bay:

And the sand itself, quite volcanic in color:

Fun yard art:

Kipahulu visitor center (part of Haleakala National Park) had a nice hands-on craft event.  Part of it was a demonstration on how to weave with hala leaves.

The other part was stringing your own lei, and Jenny was game to try:

Beautiful!

The highlight for Jerry was seeing Charles Lindbergh's grave at Palapala Ho'omau Church; that was a fun thing to surprise him with:

Coffee for the road (and coconut water for me) from Laulima farm stand:

Interesting seating area inside a "bamboo room" at the farm stand:

A waterfall that was dry the previous weekend was now flowing  - it drops off the cliff pretty much down into the ocean.  It was great having Jerry's camera to get a close-up view of it:

One of the narrower parts of the road as we made our way around to Kaupo:

Curious pattern in the hillside:

A little sea arch surrounded by surf:

It was quite the sunset under the rain and clouds, looking down toward Kihei as we made our way back around to finish the circumnavigation of Haleakala:

Monday was a quieter day, with the highlight being a drive up to Iao Valley:

More amazing greenery:

John doing a pineapple slicing demo - Jenny and Jerry bought a bunch to bring back with them to Texas, so this should be helpful:

And finally - a quick visit to a beach!

Wow, that was a wonderful weekend and lots of fun.  Thank you so much for coming to see us, Jenny and Jerry!
