Our friends Leslie and Shaun are currently racing Primal Quest in South Dakota - looks like they got a good start through the initial marathon, cave orienteering (cool!), and mountain biking. You can follow their progress on the race leaderboard over the next several days:

Boom Days!
The highlight of Leadville Boom Days (for me anyway) was watching the start/finish of the burro races. It's a rather intriguing thought, running with a burro for 12 miles (21 miles in the case of the men). But I think you really need to have a burro that you know and train with. They are a huge factor in how fast you move, especially at the end of the race, and whether you finish the race at all. Apparently more than one team gets picked up along the trail when the burro decides they have had enough and refuses to take one more step.
Hanging out before the start:

A fuzzy pair:

Hauling a** up 7th Street:

In many cases the asses were hauling the runners at the beginning:

The woman who would eventually finish second:

Some had problems right out of the gate. Go donkey go!

We saw a bit of the miner competitions - driving holes into rocks with stakes:

Back to the burro races - here is the women's winning team:

Running up Harrison Avenue to the finish - go team!

It's Massive
We knew two other groups of people going to hike up Mount Massive (2nd highest 14er in Colorado) last Saturday, so we decided that sounded like fun.
John was ready for some hiking after a long week of trail work:

Looking back along the ridge we came up:

Jason was excited to climb another 14er:

Good thing I forgot my hang glider at home:

A little more ROMO
Last Friday I went back to Rocky Mountain National Park to pick up John. I had some time for another hike, so I went up the East Inlet Trail. It's beautiful! A really neat trail, something different with interesting routes through the rocks.
It has several lakes:

Lots of pretty scenery:

Colorado Trail hiking
I've just finished a week-plus-long training stint, one last big push before Leadville. Parts of the Leadville course follow the Colorado Trail, and it's just as nice as the section we saw near Silverton. Someday we just may have to hike the whole thing.

A bit of marking on one section of the LT100 course:

An old schoolhouse in Twin Lakes:

A rainbow after a deluge in Leadville:

We're finally slowing down and I have a bit of catch-up time, which I always appreciate. Time to catch up on some blog posts!

The other side of ROMO
Yesterday I dropped John off for his volunteer trail work week at Grand Lake on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park.
He was ready and raring to go:

I went for a hike up the same trail and made it above treeline before some close-by thunder made me decide to turn around. Pretty scenery!

Griddle/Grill
On our way out of Denver, we stopped by Camping World. We have never been in a Camping World store before, but you can bet we'll be back every chance we get (as long as we have money to spend). It has a bunch of really interesting RV-related items and we wandered the aisles way too long studying everything. So long that we got to Leadville rather late, but at least the sun hadn't disappeared yet.
We came away with a griddle/grill for our stove top (among other things). This is not a revolutionary idea, to be sure, but it seems like a nice middle ground in between cooking inside and grilling outside.
Then we stopped by Safeway on Saturday and I happened to look at the box for Jiffy corn muffin mix. We love corn muffins, but our convection oven isn't exactly the best place to make them, or maybe we just haven't figured out the right settings yet. I discovered that you can make corn muffin pancakes instead - and now we have a griddle to do just that! Along with some grilled corn-on-the-cob, it was a happy, corny dinner!
