After Bighorn and a few recovery days, we headed north to Montana. EV chargers are popping up all over, but it's still easiest to follow interstate highways in some places. We're also making good use of RV parks and 50A electric hookups to recharge our truck overnight.
Anyway, we made a detour on the way to Billings in order to visit Pompey's Pillar. It's a piece of the Lewis and Clark story, including an interesting artifact.
Not the canoes - these are replicas - although it's fun to imagine trying to actually paddle them in an adventure race:
The "pillar" is the large rocky hill in the background above.
We climbed the stairs to find the only known physical evidence of Captain Clark from his explorations in the west: His signature etched into the rock:
A closer look (and it's behind glass to protect it from the elements) - hard to see in the photo, so if you ever get a chance, go visit it in person:
Reading about the travels of Lewis and Clark along the Yellowstone River and other rivers in the area, how they split up on the way home to explore additional things, and how they met back up at a confluence downstream:
Captain Clark in the visitor center:
One other interesting "happening" as we started west was that we glimpsed a train in the river. Yep, crazily we drove by the railroad bridge the same day it collapsed and we saw train cars in the Yellowstone River. That ain't normal, coach. Should have tried to get a picture.
News story and photo:
OK then! Sounds like it could have been worse (no one was hurt).
We arrived in Bozeman without any side trips into the river ourselves. It was nice to have an afternoon to wander around, enjoying the downtown and a brief stop at a brewery with bikes on the roof:
Since this is a short post, I'll throw in some EV charging pictures. We got lucky in Billings that no one was parked in the spaces by the chargers, so we could just pull up instead of unhooking. Lucky day! It's always appreciated when the chargers are placed in a less-used part of the parking lot so there's a chance this is doable. Also note the Ford Lightning with a cap on the back (like our old Tug truck):
Probably the first time we've seen 3 Rivians charging at the same time:
Love the little solar covers over the chargers. Someday maybe we'll see real covers and pull-throughs at the charging stations. Like, you know, at a gas station... Until then, this works too (especially when there's plenty of room to pull in and stay hooked up again - this never happens in a Walmart parking lot):
Next up - back to Yellowstone, yay!
