Star Trek and orienteering in CA

Last November I wanted to see the Voyager documentary premiere, but couldn't really justify driving to Los Angeles just for that.  Luckily there was also an orienteering meet in Fresno that lined up perfectly.  And Kip was interested in meeting us in Fresno for the meet.  I'd be crazy to pass up timing like that!

On the Star Trek theme, "Seven of Nine" showed up as we were driving toward a Rivian charging station:

We suspect this "Janeway" car (seen on the highway and then at a rest stop) was also going to the documentary, but never found the owner to ask:

We arrived in Hollywood with plenty of time (purposely early to miss rush hour traffic) so we had a chance to wander around the cemetery near Paramount.  Lots of famous movie-related people buried here:

We've watched enough Golden Girls to know who this is:

Judy Garland's mausoleum:

Several boxes with elaborate tributes, plus plenty of space available:

Some amazing long hallways:

Tug-E with the Hollywood sign in the background!

An excellent statue of Johnny Ramone:

Aw, it's Anton!  I knew we would find a Star Trek connection here:

John dropped me off at the studio, where I found some fellow Delta Flyers fans, super cool!

The documentary was so good; Voyager is still my favorite Star Trek series even after watching most of the rest of the others.  Worth the trip!

Cast and crew gathered on the stage afterward, including Garrett Wang, Robert Picardo, Tim Russ, and Robert Beltran:

And I'm sure I should recognize many of the other faces (producers, writers, crew):

A memorable night at Paramount!

From LA we drove up to Fresno for the orienteering weekend.  And to spend some time with Kip, yay!

The first morning event was a mass start in a park, so the whole field lined up in front of our maps.  We're in this picture... somewhere:

Rex, the race organizer, went out on the course to take pictures.  Here's Kip running while looking at his map:

Hello Rex!

In the afternoon we headed over to a college campus for the sprint race, around buildings and up/down some stairs to try to decipher a tricky map.

A second race in the same day, what?!

Doing the Clear and Check before starting the sprint:

John flying in to the finish:

On Sunday we drove out to a park near a lake for the long course.  It turned out to be somewhat technical terrain (both reading the map and moving around on the hills) so Kip and I teamed up to tackle it together.  I tend to talk almost constantly about what I'm planning/seeing/doing while I orienteering, and for once I wasn't muttering just to myself the whole time.  Thanks Kip  :)

Sharon found a friend at the finish line:

Hanging out afterward, comparing notes, eating snacks, and talking with Jay the timing guy:

That was a really fun trip, it was great to see Kip, glad we went!

Grand Canyon adventure

Last fall I had the chance to visit my friend Taylor in Flagstaff, and we went looking for a long hike with epic scenery.  Luckily, the Grand Canyon is a short drive north from Flag, plus her friends Ben  and Lauren wanted to join us.  Since we took a bunch of pictures, this is a post to document our entertaining day together.

I'm not sure I was awake yet, but Taylor was!

Walking to the top of the rim to drop down South Kaibab trail:

And the scenery begins!

Starting down the switchbacks:

A nice photo from Lauren - thanks Lauren!

Happy to be back in this beautiful place:

An excellent group shot, courtesy of a random stranger, and we all behaved ourselves for once:

It was a wonderful day for a walk:

Always love the views in all directions:

Maybe I'm taking a couple too many pictures...

Walking around a mule train:

Taylor's interesting photo of the mules:

And this shot came out particularly nice:

We had considered descending to the river, but Bright Angel Trail was closed below Havasupai Gardens for construction.  So we traversed on the Tonto Trail, something new for most of the group.

And we were rewarded with a Bighorn Sheep sighting!

He practically posed for pictures:

That's quite the expansive dining room this guy's got:

Taylor taking a group selfie...

I believe this is the one:

That's a much bigger road than I've seen in that spot before, must be a construction thing:

More signs of work at Havasupai Gardens:

Our selfie antics continue (this time including a banana peal):

Excellent company and conversations on the climb up Bright Angel:

Light and shadow:

From our leaning heads it looks like there's a wind blowing up and to the left:

If we only had a wheelbarrow, that would be something...

Kissing rocks I haven't noticed before:

Even more amazing is that I've never noticed these pictographs near the South Rim - I believe it was Lauren who pointed them out:

Thank you friends for a super fun day!
