In early September we dropped off our travel trailer in Tucson and took our truck for a drive to Colorado to meet back up with Robyn for another week of adventure.
On the way we made a slight detour in northwest New Mexico to the Bisti Badlands wilderness area - a place we'd only recently heard about. It took one glance to make us go "heck yes, we want to see that."
Happily it wasn't terribly hot, so we could get out and explore for a couple hours. Off-trail roaming around among geological wonders is one of our favorite things to do (see also - Goblin Valley).
After some walking, we started seeing odd shapes and different colors:
Just getting started with all the wonders of the area:
Climbing (virtually) the hoodoo stairs:
We found the "cracked eggs"!
How does this even happen?
At least we can visualize how an ancient lake might have contributed to this:
Balanced rocks always make me smile, no matter what size:
Continuing on through the wilderness:
A John-size hoodoo:
Something closer to "Marcy size":
Every time we turned a corner we found more things to gawk at:
We've seen some petrified wood in this part of the country, but nothing quite like this - sticking out of the side of the hill and perched precariously. We didn't even see it at first, as we'd been looking for wood on the ground.
I mean, wow...
We now interrupt your rock tour with a glimpse of a fox - hello cutie! He/she wasn't even too scared, mostly watching us to see what we would do before bounding up and over the hill. Love foxes.
Back to the crazy landscape:
We happened upon this as we started back to the truck:
Yep, this is super cool and we need to budget more wandering time next chance we get!
Highly recommend.
